Rest and Motion
Rest: A body is at rest when its position does not change relative to its surroundings or a chosen reference point.
Motion: A body is in motion when its position changes relative to its surroundings or a chosen reference point.
Translatory Motion
In translatory motion, the whole body moves from one place to another, and all its particles move through equal distances in the same direction at a given instant.
- Linear: straight path.
- Circular: circular path.
- Random: irregular path.
Rotatory Motion
A body has rotatory motion when it turns about a fixed axis. Different particles move in circles of different radii around the same axis.
Examples Ceiling fan, wheel rotating on an axle, spinning top.
Vibratory Motion
Vibratory motion is a repeated to-and-fro motion about a fixed mean position.
Examples Pendulum bob, swing, vibrating ruler, tuning fork.
